The kiss from the prince didn’t break the curse! YES!! I have always hated the idea that two teenagers knowing nothing about the real world, or each other, can instantly fall in love after having met each other for a few minutes in a sunset drenched forest somewhere. Pure evil for evil’s sake, not because of some betrayal she suffered at the hands of some guy she really liked a few years ago. This is what the trailers showed us and this is how I remember the character of Maleficent. The scene played out nicely and the dramatic profile of her shadow on the wall as she entered the throne room was really cool. Her radiant smile was on full display as she walked through the crowd of nobles and playing with King Wikus (who immigrated to this world from South Africa). This scene played out just like the Disney version and it looked like Angelina Jolie was having fun. So, yeah in this movie and just about every other version of Sleeping Beauty, Aurora is a Christian.) (oh and for those of you who don’t know “christening” is another word for baptizing. I hate to say this but really the only two things this movie did right was the “christening” scene. (Do I really need to bring up characters like Boba Fett? Or Darth Vader again?) Still, if the Star Wars prequels showed us anything it is the more light you shed on a bad ass character the more that character needs to hold up and unfortunately, we’ve seen it a dozen time now, those characters are never given good enough stories that hold up. Everything in Hollywood is about brand recognition. ![]() So with that being said, why was this movie even made? I know we live in a world of remakes and reboots, and adaptations. ![]() In fact the prince needed the help of those three pixies to overcome her, if you will recall. The bigger the stakes, the badder the villain is, the higher the heroes have to rise to meet those challenges. She was a force of narrative that is so necessary for a good story. She cared for no one, and had no earthly attachments. ![]() Every story needs a bad guy and she drew the lot for this tale. She didn’t need to be a woman first, she didn’t need to have been wronged in her past. Maleficent was, and if I could borrow from Shakespeare, “a plain dealing villain”. □Īnd here is my biggest problem with the entire thing. I loved that as a kid because honestly it was my first exposure to a swear word in a movie that I was allowed to watch. “ Now shall you deal with me, young prince, and all the powers of HELL!“. She laughed at the prince as she taunted him about what lay in his future and how a hundred years, “for a stead fast heart will be but a day”.Īnd lets not forget how she turned herself into a dragon with that awesome line facing the prince. She was always in control even when she flew into her rage about her minions looking for a baby for sixteen years. She cursed a child to death for gods sake! She had no real motivation to be evil its just something that she was. And after all those movies and those three decades, give or take, I have always listed Maleficent in my top three of four Disney villains, but she was always my number one villainess across any genre. You can get in or stay on the curb but I’m driving.įirst off, why did I even go and see this movie? Well, I, like so many other young people of my generation, was brought up on Disney movies, A-Z Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs all the way up to Brother Bear and just about everything in between, even The Black Cauldron. ![]() Now bear with me folks, we will be delving into realms of history and present in this journey so grab your top hats and make sure you have your flux capacitors energized with 1.21 Gigawatts. Well, there is no time like the present so I’ll give you my humble take on things. (Moments of deep sighing as I try to figure out how to write my opinions of the complete pile of lukewarm, no chance taking, boring, make me want to slit my throat, childhood raping, bending me over and giving it to me through the back door and doesn’t even have the goddamned common courtesy to give me a reach around, pile of time wasting crap that one can not help but expect from Hollywood and especially from Disney now a days). Uuugggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….uuuuugggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…hhhhhuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh……uuugggggggghhhhhhhhhhhh Hokay so this is a movie…kind of, portraying a “retelling” of the classic Disney version of the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty”.
